Coal load for freight wagon

Posted on 2026-01-082026-01-30 by rmolins

Steps to create a coal load for an open-top freight wagon. It takes around 10 minutes per wagon but could be reduced if done in batches.

  • Woodland scenics coal (WOODLAND-B92)
  • Mod Podge matte (PVA glue is not matte and leaves shines)
  • Foam Cardboard

Steps:

  1. Cut a piece of foam cardboard 2mm smaller than the inside of the wagon
  2. Cut two additional rectangular pieces smaller than the inside of the wagon. They will allow easy removal of the load and add height.
  3. Glue the small rectangles below the base foam cardboard
  4. Add PVA glue and add a first base layer of coal
  5. Once dry, add more coal so that it has pyramidal form
  6. Glue together using the same methodology used in ballasting.
