How to build a cheap onboard live video train (FPV)

Posted on 2024-11-032026-01-30 by rmolins

Creating a cheap and easy setup to view your model railroad from a cabin can be achieved with basic FPV drone equipment. This is not meant to be realistic, although it can be hidden inside a container.

Material needed cost approx 50 euros:

  • FPV AIO
  • 2S Battery or any battery of 2.5 to 5.5V (2xAA can work)
  • VRX USB receiver. Drone google provide better experience but are really expensive

The layout is simple:

Can be mounted in a low wagon and pushed.

Some devices may overheat if the train is idle or has low airflow. If the setup is hidden inside a container, it will increase overheating issues. Normal VTX power is 25mW this is more than enough to have over 200 meters coverage but could be reduced if thick wood or plaster is used for tunnels.

VRX USB receiver is detected as a camera on Windows 10 and in Ubuntu.
